Curriculum Overview Early Years and Key Stage 1

In Early Years and Key Stage 1 we follow the Big Maths way of teaching, which gives our children an excellent understanding, confidence and, even more importantly, enjoyment.  It involves a very systematic teaching of each skill through small, clearly defined steps which are revisited constantly.

At Yeadon Primary School, an understanding of calculations is developed from the beginning of nursery using Little Big Maths, and continued throughout Reception and into Years 1 and 2 using Little Big Maths and Big Maths.  The Calculations Policy aims to give some visual images to support children’s developing understanding of calculations.

Curriculum Overview Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, we follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning, which helps children develop confidence, fluency and a secure understanding of mathematical concepts. Learning is carefully structured through small, progressive steps that build on prior knowledge and are regularly revisited to ensure understanding is embedded.

Children develop their calculation skills through a range of practical, written and mental methods. Lessons provide opportunities to reason mathematically, solve problems and explain their thinking using appropriate mathematical vocabulary.

The Calculations Policy aims to provide clear visual representations and strategies to support children's understanding and application of calculation methods throughout Key Stage 2.
